A warm welcome and thank you for being here!
I have been an artist in some form always. The first picture books and songs from my childhood were the most impressionable influences on my artistic life. I’m inspired by them still, as well as by all my family and friends, many years living abroad, and by folklore, music, and art history. I like the mixing of old and new, of figurative art and abstraction, of the real and the magical.
When I design a picture I begin with a drawing or photo. I choose images that give the effect of something moving. Sometimes they show repose. Often, the beginning is a fragment of text or a feeling that I try to make visible.
Creating an atmosphere of color to hold the imagery is very helpful. I use mixed media to layer a backdrop of texture on a board. Images are arranged on top and integrated. For the detailed work of imagery and portraiture, water-soluble oil paints are used.
As a commissioner, I create custom artwork for others. Commissions are an honor to do and a meaningful experience. I enjoy meeting people and learning about the things that make them happy. In this way, I’m able to work with others to create paintings that portray the people, animals, places, and memories that are special to them.
For over 25 years I was a musician and worked in the different genres of classical, traditional, experimental, and pop. Music has a great impact on how I see and understand the world. Many of the elements I encounter musically, I transfer and use in art.
I live with my family on the west coast of Michigan. I love being a mother and painting. I also work in proofreading and with children at our local library.
